This house is based on a idea of 2 halves; almost complete opposites of each other -
solid-void
public-private
upstairs-downstairs
heavy-light
dark-light
The two halves are similar in form although they are different in their massing - the lighter one is for public and semi-public spaces which is more open to the weather, while the solid half is for the living spaces, dining-kitchen and bedrooms, and is therefore more enclosed and secure.
The floor plan for this block is reversed - having the bedrooms on the ground floor while the living-dining-kitchen-studio are on an open plan upstairs. This brings the living spaces on to the same level as the public open spaces, allowing activities to spill outside during good weather.
