31.1.2024 Wednesday - Springvale and Summervale

Today, I put on a shirt and shoes and long trousers to present the mixed development project we call Tecktonicity but the client calls 'Springvale'. Easier to pronounce and promote, I suppose - he has an inclination towards names from Australia - Victoria and New South Wales in particular.

30.1.2024 Tuesday - Arlene's birthday

Tomorrow is Arlene's birthday, but we always celebrate it in the office a day earlier because she always take the day off to celebrate with Mag. Sam and I noticed that she does that on Mag's birthday as well.

20.1.2024 Saturday - different days for all of us

I do some work but felt like it isn't enough, I didn't go through all the projects, in one project I haven't gone through all the plans. I didn't work on the book shelf, I haven't moved the oven in, I haven't cleaned up the kitchen. I feel fine but my lethargy gets better of me and I start to feel achey.

One thing I did do is to visit Sara at her place of work, she invited mom and I to go (and even reminded us). And so we go, it is raining heavily but we find a car park at the end of the five foot way, and we stroll right in. Mom enjoy herself talking to strangers and drinking the free beer, but we get into trouble with my sister who shows up looking a bit stressed after teaching her yoga class.

I get carried away and suggest too many things to Raha and Ricco. But I'll see if they ask for help before I speak about it again.

Sam is at W Hotel with her former school mates, accompanying a friend who is quite ill from cancer.

The tall dining space has nice light in the early morning, I start after returning from my walk. Working on the Tasik Biru apartments.

19.1.2024 Friday - really early start

Sam goes to KL, and I drive her to the airport and decide to have an early start to the day (6 a.m.). And good thing too - I managed to draw up a simple idea for house by the river. I meet the land owner to discuss our other project and also to pass him this drawing with the understanding that I am not able to do this project. We are busy with current work, and would not have the time to see it through properly.

Tennis - played badly. Dinner with team intersection and then a night cap.

18.1.2024 Thursday - the doc is on long leave

17.1.2024 Wednesday - factory visit

Young Chloe was reluctant at first but plucked up the courage to train with us for ten days.

Wednesday is a busy day, we have mom in the evenings and tonight I promised PH, GW and TY a home cooked meal at No. 40. (which ended up with Sam cooking and me minding mom and working at my new workstation which Sean set up for me).

I get a phone (the continuation of yesterday's chat in the Grab car) and sure enough, there is an ultimate for the buyer who made some last minute requests. Requests which will jeopardise the submission approvals process - Freddie thinks this is a ploy for the buyer to descend the stage (Chinese idiom). And sure enough - at 5pm, Teck rings and tells me just that. Back to the drawing board, but for a good cause.

In the afternoon, I join the team for a visit to an aluminium fabrication factory (they are the contractors for RENNA) I am glad I did; learning while having fun.

16.1.2024 Tuesday - sunny with afternoon thunderstorms

View of the condominiums, part of the clubhouse is visible. It is a concrete structure with a planted grass roof

The phone call comes when I'm in the Grab-car, in heavy downpour on the way to the cab. 'Can you come to my office now?'. I usually don't decline this client but it's been a long day and I am already late for my squash game.

I'll call you tomorrow - and ring off. It feels good to say no, to have a semblance of control although I do keep an eye out for messages throughout the evening. Still, it felt good to say 'no' when I didn't want to do what I was told to do.

Earlier today, I did what I should have done several weeks previous; to have a site meeting for the condominiums. Though combative in parts, we do see a light at the end of the tunnel.

We made a model to confirm that the client understood our initial ideas for the school

After lunch, we do what we want to: to present the updated scheme for the school. We made a cardboard model, and lucky we did as it confirmed some key ideas.

15.1.2024 Monday targets for January

14.1.2024 Sunday - pre-loved

13.1.2024 Saturday - two houses

Brian texts me about traveling to Kuching, and wants to put up near our house - 'we have two, there is one which is nearer to town and another one full of cats and dogs'. That sentence sums up the present situation - we have a weekend house where we sit quietly and look through the thousands of books on topics selected by someone else.

That evening, before dinner Ivy sat engrossed in a book she found in one of the boxes (on Abraham Lincoln) while we fussed around getting dinner ready. This image captures the spirit of this house.

Another image is in the front room where I can sit and draw in the afternoons when it gets hotter in the kitchen. Years ago, Wong Kiong showed us a photo of Richard Lepastrier bent over a drawing board in a verandah - and said 'that's Min when he is 60'.

12.1.24 Friday - Sophia goes back to school

11.1.2024 Thursday Cooking for the 'Don'

10.1.2024 Wednesday - The Show

I am offered a position in a new company Si Yong and Stephen are setting up to host design seminars, it is a bit like PDF but with a broader reach. It aims to facilitate seminar with expertise and experience in architecture, technology and the environment. They aim to take this proposal to PAMSC to see if the Chapter sees the same benefits we are offering them.

I think my role is the same as in PDF except this time, I'll have staff and will be given a dividend. Sam thinks it's a no brainer, even though I will have to come up with some money - 'you enjoy doing this, and you enjoy working with these guys, just do it'.
