26.12.2024 Thursday - stormwater troopers

After talking to Edberg, I realise that they do their submissions without full knowledge of what we are proposing/thinking. It is hence important to speak t the engineers all the time.

A quiet morning I spend drawing and talking to people. I am trying to produce one item of important drawing each day. Sometimes it involved completing work which one of the others have started and handed to me, for me to review. In some cases, I take and complete it (after each I try to make sure that I explain to them as well, so we both learn.)

Today's task is the proposed new customer lounge for the hospital; suggesting a different location from their proposed one. Our does not require as much power and AC, and has water inlets/outlets making it possible to have a pantry. Small problems to be solved at such high level; it is due to a lack of ability on their part? or the fact that they like how we work?. I will be sending in a fee proposal to answer this question.

5th September 2023 Tuesday

After 7 years, we are still working on the hospital - finishing the final packages as well as new projects within the old ward block. CK likes to takes photos of me at work, perhaps he does this to help me with material for my blog, or he is tickled that we are still flying 2 hours each month to sort out corridor widths and ceiling heights.

I enjoy this work; solving problems on site, coordinating services and structure with architecture, negotiating with people to minimise redundant work. I also enjoy the people's company - we have built something of significance outside Sarawak, and no one can take that away from us.

27th June 2023 Tuesday - scolding people

Last night we had dinner with Matron Ong who has returned to BSC - which we all thought would benefit the hospital. She will be the Director of Nursing and will not be directly involved in the expansion programme (she said) Though she joined us at our technical meeting with the contractors and her hospital colleagues - I knew it would be hard for her to stay away from issues that affect the running of the hospital. I admire that.

The technical aspect of the meeting was not hard to settle, though I think SB can be quicker in their execution of works. Towards the end of meeting, I asked what the objective was to send photos of site issues which were resolved a few days prior to a work chat group at 5:35p.m. on a Saturday evening. The sender was unable to respond saying he had forwarded it from an earlier conversation with the contractor, which does not explain why resend them like instructions to the consultants, for matters already resolved, on Saturday evening. I suspect that he was trying to score KPI points but not smart to do it productively. One of the best ways to show how well you have done is to acknowledge those who helped you achieve this goal.

I was not sparing in my reprimand, as I was also angry with last night request for MOH drawings by 10 a.m. this morning, drawings that they should have a copy of. PH reminded them that the hardcopies of the CCC are even more important to have in their archives, those present avoided eye contact and when not able to confirm.

31st October 2022 Monday - sketching ideas with SL

During the office move, I found stacks of site reports which were printed only on one side and decided to use them as sketch pads. They're A4 size, and ideal for quick scribbles when talking to the architects, contractors or more proper sketches to test options. I scan them to use as diary entries in this blog - this is a series of plywood frames for glazed walls. (which the carpenter converted into mock up samples).
